View onto the old harbour from the fish market
image author: Uwe Albrecht
Only since the 14. century ist the fish market called market. He was busy because of the harbour. Goods marketed were 'Hoekerwaren', butter, eggs, fish, vegetable and other provisions.
A crane is standing here since the 14. century but was several times renewed and then totally destroyed in 1659 at the city fire. The 1661 newly errected wooden step crane was taken apart in 1898 as it became useless. Only in 1977 was the old crane reconstructed in the course of the old town redevelopement, but  only the outer shell without the interior. A small harbour information centre was 1999 build into it.

Wooden step crane at the fish market
image author: Uwe Albrecht

The wooden step crane, who's lifting wheel was worked by 'crane steppers' lifted heavy stocks onto the neighbouring weighing building where goods were taxed by weight.

The first weighing building was in the 13. century still near the horse market but was moved in the 14. century to the fish market. The building today merged from a comprehensive renovation in 1753, a simple two-storey half-timbered house. The wooden fascia is moulded.

At the scales and the crane we follow the roundof the old harbour at the row of houses, water east.

Remarkable is, that water east and west are seen as one street. The houses on the west side got the uneven numbers and the east the even numbers.

Because of its position beneath the castle was the street also called 'sub castro', 'sub urbe' or 'under der Borch'. Even though the street is missing individual spectacular buildings it still has many half-timbered houses from the 17. and early 18. century.
